Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to word associations. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application, she was finally admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor would go on to have frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to finish her studies in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, which were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
